Phonics
Our Implementation
We teach early reading using the Read Write Inc. phonics programme from Nursery to Year 2, with continued support for any pupils who need it in Key Stage 2.
-
Nursery: children develop early phonological awareness through rhymes, stories, and games that explore rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, and oral blending.
-
Reception: children are introduced to Set 1 and Set 2 sounds, using rhymes, actions and blending activities to build confidence.
-
Year 1: pupils learn Set 3 sounds and apply them through reading and writing activities, preparing for the Phonics Screening Check in summer term.
-
Year 2 and beyond: children continue to access daily phonics where needed and progress to Read Write Inc. Comprehension and whole-class reading sessions as fluency and understanding develop.
All staff delivering RWI are fully trained and regularly coached to ensure teaching quality and consistency. Groupings are flexible and reviewed frequently to ensure every child makes rapid progress.
Reading Beyond Phonics
Phonics is one part of our broader Reading Curriculum.
As children move through school, they continue to develop fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary through high-quality texts and whole-class reading lessons.
Books are closely matched to each child’s phonics level, ensuring early success and confidence in reading.
Supporting Reading at Home

Our Impact
We monitor the impact of our phonics teaching through:
-
Regular RWI assessments and regrouping;
-
Monitoring of reading fluency and comprehension;
-
Outcomes from the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and Year 2 rechecks;
-
Lesson visits, book looks and pupil voice;
-
And tracking of children’s progress through KS2 to ensure early reading success translates into confident, independent readers.
