Celebrating Creativity, Community and Curiosity!

This week, Ordsall Primary School was proud to host two very special guests as part of the official launch of the Retford Book Festival! We were delighted to welcome Paul Cookson, renowned poet and Retford’s very own Town Crier, alongside talented illustrator Liz Million, for a morning of storytelling, poetry, and art that truly inspired our children. Paul officially declared the festival open right here at Ordsall, and his brilliant performance had us all laughing and joining in.
A huge congratulations to Maja for placing first, and to Johan for placing third, in the Retford Book Festival Short Story Competition. Maja’s story was praised by the judges for its touching theme of friendship in unlikely places, while Johan’s entry stood out for its blend of heroism and history. Both children have been invited to attend the Bethany Walker Author event on Saturday 14th June at 11am at The Grove, Retford, where they will receive their prizes—well done to you both!
We were also honoured by the presence of the Town Mayor of Retford, who shared a beautiful quote from Christopher Robin to Winnie the Pooh, reminding us all of the power of friendship and imagination. The event was a fantastic celebration of books, creativity, and our community connections.
Year 1 pupils visited All Hallows Church for a fascinating trip as part of their RE learning. Reverend Alex welcomed the children with a cheerful song before guiding them through the church, where they discovered a range of holy objects and learned more about the building’s special role in the local community. The children asked thoughtful questions and represented Ordsall brilliantly.
Meanwhile, over in Reception, there’s been a flurry of excitement as the children got creative making their Father’s Day cards. We can’t say too much just yet – it’s a surprise, after all – but we can reveal that there were lots of messy hands involved! Parents, keep your eyes peeled this weekend!
A big well done to all of our Stars of the Week, who have shown our school’s RESPECT values of resilience, effort, support, passion, enrichment, compassion, and teamwork. We’re incredibly proud of you all.
And finally, congratulations to Matisse Class, who topped the attendance chart for Phases 1 and 2 with an impressive 98.1%, and to Cliff Class for winning Phase 3 with 97.3%. Great attendance makes a big difference—keep it up!
Wishing all of our families a relaxing weekend and a very Happy Father’s Day to those celebrating!
