Welcome to the year group page for Mondrian, Seurat and Degas classes.
Summer Term
English
During the Summer term, we will continue to apply our phonics skills in our writing while developing our use of capital letters, full stops, and clear finger spaces to create accurate sentences. We will also focus on composing longer pieces of writing, linking ideas together to form coherent texts and carefully considering our word choices to create greater effect. Throughout the term, we will read a wide range of texts during guided reading, Read and Relax sessions, and English lessons. These will include both stories and non-fiction texts, helping to broaden our understanding and enjoyment of different types of writing.
Maths
This term, we will continue developing our understanding of multiplication and division. We will practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, and explore how numbers can be organised into equal groups and arrays. We will also begin learning about fractions—what they are and how to find fractions of shapes and quantities. We will then spend time strengthening our understanding of position and direction while developing our mathematical vocabulary in this area. During our place value work, we will extend our knowledge of numbers up to 100, building confidence with all two-digit numbers. Finally, we will continue learning about measures, focusing on money and telling the time.
Science
In Science, we will continue learning about the seasons by exploring what happens to the world around us during the summer and comparing it with the seasons we have already studied. We will also spend time outdoors learning about plants and flowers, identifying and classifying them into groups such as wild and garden plants, as well as evergreen and deciduous trees.
History
In History, we will turn the clocks back to learn about the Great Fire of London. We will begin using historical sources to help us understand what happened, how the fire started, why it spread so quickly, and how it led to important changes in London and across Great Britain, including improvements to buildings and the fire service. We will also learn about Thomas Farriner and Samuel Pepys, and the roles they played during this time. Our experience for this half term will be a Great Fire of London drama workshop in school. More details to follow.
Geography
In Geography, we will develop our knowledge of the United Kingdom by learning about the four countries that make it up, their capital cities, and the seas that surround our island.
Art
This term, we will study the work of a range of print artists and share our views and opinions, discussing what we like and dislike about their work. We will explore where they find their inspiration and how they create their prints. Using techniques such as stamping, pressing and rubbing, we will then design and create our own prints.
Design & Technology
This term, we will be learning to work with textiles, exploring different methods for joining materials together and adding embellishments as we design and create our own hand puppets.
Computing
We will be learning how to create digital media, focusing on developing our writing skills using a computer. We will become familiar with the keyboard, practise typing text, explore the toolbar, and learn how to edit and change our writing using a range of tools. Later in the term, we will also learn how to programme a simple animation using Scratch.
Religious Education
In RE, we will consolidate our learning from across the year on Judaism and Christianity. We will be trying to reorganise our visit to the church and will hopefully get to go inside and see all the features we have been learning about.
RSHE/RESPECT
We will be learning about how to look after our own health and wellbeing. We will explore ways to keep our bodies and minds healthy and understand why this is important in our daily lives. We will also learn about different emotions, how they can feel in our bodies, and ways to keep ourselves safe in a range of situations.
Music
We will continue to use our new Sing Up programme, where we will listen to different styles of music, keep the beat, learn songs, and perform using untuned instruments.
PE
In PE, we will be engaging in Outdoor and adventurous activities as well as perfecting our Athletic skills to prepare ourselves for sports day. We will also be learning to play dodgeball and increasing our flexibility through yoga.
Spring Term
English
We will continue applying our phonics skills in our writing and developing our use of capital letters, full stops, and clear finger spaces to write accurate sentences. We will begin to write longer pieces, retell familiar stories, and create our own. Throughout the term, we will read a wide range of texts during guided reading, Read and Relax, and English lessons, where we will explore stories such as Forever Bear.
Maths
This term, we will consolidate our understanding of place value and begin identifying tens and ones within numbers. We will start with numbers up to 20 before moving on to numbers up to 50. We will further develop our addition and subtraction skills and begin learning about measures, including length, height, mass, and volume.
Science
In Science, we will continue learning about the seasons by exploring what happens to the world around us during winter. We will also identify and classify animals into groups such as mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. In addition, we will learn about carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores.
History
In History, we will explore the history of our local area by learning about Retford in the past. We will discover how buildings, jobs, and transport have changed and developed over time.
Geography
In Geography, we will learn about hot and cold areas of the world. We will explore where these regions are located and what life is like in these environments.
Art
This term, we will develop our painting skills. By studying the work of Julian Opie, we will learn about colour mixing and portrait painting and then create our own artworks inspired by his style.
Design & Technology
We will be designing and making moving pictures. We will look at books that use mechanisms to create movement before learning how to make lever and slider mechanisms. We will then apply these skills to create our own moving picture.
Computing
We will continue using iPads to practise logging in to access Numbots. We will also learn about internet safety. Children can also use Numbots at home using the login details in the front of their planners.
Religious Education
In RE, we will learn about Judaism and Jewish festivals, exploring how they are celebrated. We will study the festival of Hanukkah and learn about the significance of the menorah, Pesach, the Seder plate, and the story of Passover.
RESPECT
We will be thinking about what it means to live in the wider world. We will learn about rules and routines, celebrating differences, and including everyone. We will consider how to look after each other and care for our environment by picking up litter and saving water.
Music
We will begin our new Sing Up programme, where we will listen to different styles of music, keep the beat, learn songs, and perform using untuned instruments.
PE
In PE, we will move our bodies in fun and energetic ways through gymnastics and dance. We will also develop a range of fundamental skills and work on improving our overall fitness.
Autumn Term
English
We’ll be continuing to work on applying our phonics skills into our writing and developing our use of capital letters, full stops and clear finger spaces to write sentences. We will be starting to write extended pieces and retelling familiar stories as well as writing our own. We will continue to read a range of text both within our daily guided reading sessions, read and relax and through English where we will explore stories such as Forever Bear.
Maths
This term we’ll be consolidating our knowledge of place value and beginning to identify tens and ones within numbers. We will start by looking at numbers within 20 and then move onto larger numbers up to 50. We will be furthering our knowledge of addition and subtraction and also starting work on measures learning about length, height, mass and volume.
Science
In Science we will be continuing our learning about the seasons, exploring what happens to the world around us during Winter. We will then be identifying and classifying different animals learning about mammals, fish, birds, reptiles and amphibains. We will also learn about and categorise animals into Carnivors, herbivore
History
In History, we’ll be learning about toys from the past and present, observing how toys have changed e.g. through the use of more modern materials and using historical sources to find out about some famous toy inventors.
Geography
In Geography, we’ll will be observing and recording the weather. Learning about the weather symbols and how weather varies in different areas.
Art
We’re getting creative! This term, we’ll be learning how to use different lines and basic shapes within our drawings. We will experiment with and use a range of different drawing tools to create simple sketches of familiar objects.
Design & Technology
We’ll be designing and making smoothies using a range of different fruits. We’ll investigate existing products and then plan, make, and test our creations like real designers.
Computing
We’ll be using iPads to practice using log in credentials to access Numbots. We will learn about keeping passwords safe and safe use of technology. Children can also practice using Numbots on home devices using the password in the front of their planners.
Religious Education
We’ll be finding out about Christianity. We will study the Christian festival of Christmas and how this is celebrated. We will also look at Christian stories about caring for others.
RESPECT
We’ll be talking about big ideas like friendships, keeping safe, healthy choices, and what makes us special — learning how to look after ourselves and each other. We will also spend some time learning about the schools RESPECT values, what these mean and our zones of regulation.
Music
We’ll be listening to different styles of music, keeping the beat, learning songs and performing on the Glockenspiel!
PE
We’ll be moving our bodies in lots of fun ways during gymnastics and dance. We will also be learning a range of fundamental skills and improving our fitness levels.
