Welcome to our Year 5 class page! This term is packed with exciting learning opportunities across the curriculum. Below is an overview of what the children will be exploring during the Spring term.
English
This term, pupils will enjoy reading engaging and thought-provoking texts, including War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells and Viking Boy by Tony Bradman. Through guided reading, discussion and writing, children will deepen their understanding of characters, settings and themes. Our writing will be linked to important historical events connected to our science and history topics, helping children write with purpose and imagination.
Maths
In maths, children will develop their confidence using formal methods of multiplication and division, applying these skills to real-world problem solving. They will also extend their understanding of fractions and explore how these link to decimals and percentages. In addition, pupils will learn about perimeter, area and statistics.
Science
Year 5 have two exciting science topics this term:

Space – Children will explore the wonders of our solar system, learning how day and night occur, how planets orbit the sun, and how the moon orbits the Earth.

Reversible and Irreversible Changes – In Spring 2, pupils will investigate states of matter and discover which changes can be reversed and which cannot, using hands-on practical experiments.
History
In history, we will be learning all about the Vikings and their impact on Britain. Our journey begins with the Viking raid on Lindisfarne in 793 AD and continues through to their eventual defeat in 1066.
Geography
This term in geography, the children will explore climate change, learning about its causes and discussing modern strategies that aim to reduce its impact on our planet.
Art
In art, pupils will study the famous artist Vincent van Gogh. They will explore his artwork and techniques before creating their own paintings inspired by his distinctive style.
Design & Technology
Throughout the Spring term, children will design, make, test and evaluate their own mechanisms. They will follow the full design process while developing problem-solving and basic engineering skills.
Computing
In computing, pupils will focus on online safety. They will learn how to stay safe online, use technology and online games responsibly, and understand how to report any concerns.
Religious Education
In RE, we will explore different religions and beliefs, learning about inspirational people from around the world. Children will also discover the role of religious charities and why being charitable is important.
RESPECT (PSHE)
Through our RESPECT lessons, children will discuss important topics such as friendships, staying safe, making healthy choices and celebrating what makes each of us unique. These sessions support pupils in caring for themselves and others.
Music
In music, children will listen to a range of musical styles, keep a steady beat, learn new songs and have opportunities to play a variety of instruments.
Physical Education (PE)
PE lessons will include a range of activities such as hockey, tennis and dodgeball, alongside creative movement and gymnastics to build strength, coordination and teamwork.
French
In French, pupils will learn fun words and phrases linked to the four seasons and an exciting topic all about ice cream! They will practise speaking, listening and singing in another language.
During the Autumn term, this is what we will be looking at throughout the curriculum.
English
We’ll be diving into some amazing stories like Night of the Red Devil (a story about a boy and his family on holiday in Whitby) and Beowulf (an epic tale of a brave warrior slaying monsters) and writing our own diary entries, narratives and poems. We’ll be learning how to make our writing even better with adventurous vocabulary, strong sentences, and correct punctuation.
Maths
We’re becoming number experts! This term we’ll be learning all about place value, adding, subtraction, multiplication and fractions, all whilst solving problems to build our confidence with numbers.
Science
Get ready to be a scientist! We’ll be investigating forces such as gravity, friction, and air and water resistance, whilst asking questions, making predictions, and doing experiments to develop our understanding.
History
In History, we’ll be travelling back all the way to the mid-400s, where the Anglo-Saxon period in Britain began.
Geography
In Geography, we’re exploring our British coastline using a variety of map work with a focus on Whitby.
Art
We’re getting creative! This term, we’ll be drawing, painting or sculpting just like real artists, such as Illuminated Letters inspired by the Anglo-Saxons
Design & Technology
We’ll be designing and making something brilliant! Whether it’s building, cooking, or crafting, we’ll plan, make, and test our creations like real inventors.
Computing
We’ll be using computers to create our very own game on coding software Scratch, and learning how to use technology in clever and safe ways.
Religious Education
We’ll be finding out about different religions and beliefs, learning how people celebrate, pray and what they believe is important in life focusing on the religion and practices of Islam.
RESPECT
We’ll be talking about big ideas like friendships, keeping safe, healthy choices, and what makes us special — learning how to look after ourselves and each other.
Music
We’ll be listening to different styles of music, keeping the beat, learning songs such as Livin’ on a Prayer by Jon Bon Jovi, and maybe even writing our own!
PE
We’ll be moving our bodies in lots of fun ways focusing on invasion games, fitness and dance.
French
We’ll be learning to say fun words and phrases in French like greetings, colours and food — and having a go at speaking, listening and singing in another language!
